Consul General Vu Chi Mai of the Consulate General of Vietnam in Fukuoka visited the Yanagawa Doll Festival: Sagemon Tour.

In March, Hinamatsuri, also known as Doll Festival or Girls’ Day, are being held all over the prefecture.

In the Yanagawa region, it has been customary from a long time ago to celebrate the birth of a girl by decorating a doll's platform with a colorful “sagemon” on the first day.

Sagemon is a combination of auspicious cloth crafts such as cranes, rabbits, chicks, and crawling dolls, and “Yanagawa Mari'” wrapped with bright thread. It contains the wishes of mothers, grandmothers, relatives etc,. for happiness and health for their daughters etc.

On March 2nd, Consul General Vu Chi Mai of the Consulate General of Vietnam in Fukuoka visited the Yanagawa Doll Festival: Sagemon Tour. Consul General Mai toured the old folk house where Sagemon was displayed and the residence of the Yanagawa feudal lord Tachibana, Ohana. Regarding the visit, she commented, “The Doll Festival is a wonderful part of Japanese culture, and I display Hina dolls at my home in Hanoi. It was my first time to see “Sagemon”, and it was gorgeous and adorable. I was also impressed by the fact that each doll had a wish written on it.If I have the chance, I would like to visit the Doll Festival in various places.”
