Fukuoka Prefecture and the Fukuoka International Exchange Foundation Co-Hosted Seminar on Disaster Preparedness and Information Dissemination for Foreign Residents
To help foreign residents in Fukuoka Prefecture respond appropriately during natural disasters, Fukuoka Prefecture and the Fukuoka International Exchange Foundation held a seminar on Saturday, June 28, 2025. The event targeted representatives from consulates and international communities within the prefecture.
In the morning, participants visited the Fukuoka Citizens’ Disaster Prevention Center in Momochihama, Sawara Ward, where they experienced hands-on disaster simulations. These included a virtual reality disaster drill, a smoke evacuation exercise simulating a fire, fire extinguisher training using water, and an earthquake simulation. While the activities were enjoyable, participants remained highly engaged and focused on learning practical skills.
In the afternoon, Associate Professor Takashi Sugiyama of Kyushu University’s Faculty of Human-Environment Studies delivered a lecture titled “Effective Communication During Disasters: Insights from Rumors and Misinformation.” During the second half, participants engaged in group work, exchanging perspectives and discussing strategies for sharing reliable information in diverse, multicultural communities.
The seminar will be held again later this fiscal year. For details and updates, please check the Fukuoka International Exchange Foundation’s website: https://fief.or.jp/
